What Night Mode Actually Changes
Night mode (Night Shift on iPhone, Night Light on Android) shifts your screen toward warmer, more orange tones after sunset. The instinct is right. Less blue light means less of the daytime signal your brain reacts to.
The catch is how little it removes. It nudges the color of the screen. It doesn't turn the brightness down, and a bright screen suppresses melatonin almost regardless of its color.
The Studies Aren't Kind to It
When researchers tested this directly, Night Shift didn't meaningfully reduce melatonin suppression. Warming the color while the screen stayed bright left the effect roughly intact Nagare et al., 2019.
A separate study on Night Shift and real sleep landed in the same place. People who used it didn't sleep better than people who left it off Duraccio et al., 2021.
What It Misses
Two things slip past night mode entirely. The first is green light. Night mode is built to cut blue, not green, so most of the green light goes right through, and green suppresses melatonin too.
The second is everything that isn't your phone. The lamp on your nightstand, the light overhead, the TV across the room. Night mode only touches the one screen it runs on, so the rest of the room keeps sending the same daytime signal that keeps you up after a scroll.

What Actually Works
If the goal is to keep your screen and still cut the light, you have to filter it at your eyes, not tint one display. That's what red lenses do. They block blue and green before either reaches you, whether it comes from your phone, your lamp, or the TV.
Night mode was the right instinct. It just stops at the color of a single screen. Filtering the whole range, from the whole room, is the part that was missing.

Is night mode useless, then?
Not useless, just not enough. Warming your screen shaves off some blue, which is a start. But it doesn't dim the screen, doesn't filter green, and doesn't touch the rest of the room, so on its own it doesn't do much.
Should I use night mode and glasses together?
